AmeriCorps Service Member: ESOL Program (2008-2009)
DEFINITION
This full-time position assists with management and administration of the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program. The job combines organizational, administrative duties with people-centered, communicative activities; this is a wonderful opportunity to work closely with Durham’s immigrant community, to practice Spanish, and to develop both project management and ESOL teaching skills. Successful applicants will have a strong interest in literacy, education, and language; will enjoy the creative challenge of collaborating with people from diverse backgrounds; will work independently and meet deadlines; and will contribute innovative ideas to an evolving program and team. The ideal candidate will thrive in both the office and the school environment.
Since ESOL classes meet at various locations and times across Durham, the AmeriCorps Member must have their own transportation and must be able to work a flexible schedule which includes regular daytime and evening hours and occasional weekend hours. Spanish proficiency is strongly desired but not absolutely essential.
FUNCTIONS
The ESOL AmeriCorps Member supports:
- organization and management of classroom facilities
- recruitment, training, and management of tutors and volunteers
- enrollment, assessment, and tracking of students
- delivery of school-readiness activities to 3-5 year-olds in family literacy program
- collection and organization of administrative data
- planning and implementation of program events
SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Classroom Support
- Completes 12 hour Tutor Training (required of ESOL volunteers) on the following dates:
- Monday August 18, 2008 6-9pm
- Wednesday August 20, 2008 6-9pm
- Saturday August 23, 2008 9am-3pm
- Substitutes for ESOL Tutors when they must miss class.
- Assists students in computer lab.
- Manages ESOL classroom building and supports program participants on designated evenings and days (one or two evenings per week).
- Provides support at Escuela de la Familia ESOL Family Literacy program
- Attends Escuela 1-3 mornings per week
- Assists with bilingual preschool
- Provides childcare for infants and toddlers
- Creates and organizes classroom materials, such as binders of activities on a given class theme or posters highlighting student work.
Administrative Support and Data Management
- Collects administrative data from students and volunteers.
- Manages class rolls and student attendance data (enters data into database, updates class notebooks, maintains list of students who have missed four consecutive classes, etc).
- Assists with student intakes (administers and grades placement tests, interviews students, organizes records, etc).
- Assists with letters and phone calls to students.
- Assists with program evaluation.
- Assists with routine office tasks (answers phone, makes copies, maintains informational bulletin board, etc.).
Events and Publicity
- Attends volunteer fairs and community events to publicize DLC.
- Assists with planning and implementation of ESOL events.
Additional
- Participates in DLC meetings, events, and projects as needed.
- Performs other related program related tasks as assigned by the ESOL Program Coordinator
- Meets NC LiteracyCorps requirements (see below).
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSITION
Should possess a High School diploma or GED; preference given to applicants with Bachelors degree. Must have basic computer knowledge (Word, Excel, basic web skills). Strong communication skills are essential. Preference will be given to individuals with Spanish language skills and knowledge of Latin American culture. Experience working with literacy, ESOL, or community outreach programs a plus.

NC LITERACYCORPS
NC LiteracyCorps members are neither employees nor volunteers; they are members of a National Service Program. The Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education (SCALE) will provide ongoing support for both members and community and campus-based sites through regular training, site visits, print resources, and conference calls.
Interested persons must commit to 1700 hours over 10-12 months of service. The AmeriCorps member will attend an orientation in August, and full-time service will begin on September 4, 2007.
Full-time NC LiteracyCorps Members will receive a living allowance of $12,000 for 1700 hours of service, and upon satisfactory completion of service, an education award of $4725.00.
