AmeriCorps Service Member: Teen Career Academy (2008-2009)
DESCRIPTION
This position is a fulltime AmeriCorps education position involving recruitment and training of volunteer tutors, direct tutoring, testing, instruction, classroom management and support to 16-18 years old youth. Instruction is geared to assisting students pass GED tests in Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies. The AmeriCorps TCA Assistant reports to and is evaluated by the Lead TCA Instructor. Work includes providing some instruction to students (total of 20 youth divided into two groups) in an informal classroom setting. The AmeriCorps TCA Assistant works with volunteer tutors and assistants for most classroom activities.
FUNCTIONS
The AmeriCorps TCA Assistant provides and supports:
- Recruitment, training and logistical assignments for volunteer tutors
- Pre-testing, progress and post testing of students
- Instruction in designated GED subject areas
- Student files and record keeping.
SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responds to basic service information requests from potential students and volunteers
- Conducts volunteer orientation and training
- Coordinates student and parent orientation
- Assesses and documents student progress.
- Recruits, trains and coordinates volunteer tutors
- Matches students with tutors and assistants and assigns to small instructional groups
- Observes and monitors tutor/student activities including meetings and small group classes
- Attends and participates in DLC meetings pertaining to the Teen Career Academy
- Assists Lead TCA Instructor with student and tutor recognition celebrations and other special events
- Assists with program design and curriculum development
- Performs other tasks as assigned by the Lead TCA Instructor
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSITION
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education, social work, counseling or education related area. Must have basic computer knowledge and skills and desire to work with minorities and the less privileged.
COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Position requires the ability to multi-task. Duties may be complex due to the background of youth, the need for practice testing, counseling, coordinating volunteers and assistants.
NC LITERACYCORPS
NC LiteracyCorps members are neither employees nor volunteers; they are members of a National Service Program. The Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education (SCALE) will provide ongoing support for both members and community and campus-based sites through regular training, site visits, print resources, and conference calls.
Interested persons must commit to 1700 hours over 10-12 months of service. The Program will start September, 2008 and run until August 31, 2009.
Full-time NC LiteracyCorps Members will receive a living allowance of $12,000 for 1700 hours of service, and upon satisfactory completion of service, an education award of $4725.00.
