The DLC's Achievement Academy provides small group GED classes and one-on-one tutoring for students who need to improve their reading skills prior to GED-level study. Classes and tutoring take place at DLC's main building at 1905 Chapel Hill Road.
About Our Program
AAD serves students ages 16-24 throughout the year. We hold new student orientation on Mondays (except holidays) at 1:00. We welcome drop-ins, but feel free to call to let us know you are coming or to ask any questions. You are not required to bring any documentation or materials to orientation. Please be on time.
At our initial meeting, students complete a reading assessment to determine whether they will be in pre-GED or GED classes.
Pre-GED is for students who need to strengthen their reading skills. Students attend Monday through Friday and work one-on-one with a trained volunteer tutor. Students will have daily homework focused on reading and responding to a text from our leveled library.
The GED classroom setting is for students ready to engage in core, academic courses in preparation for GED testing. We maintain a small teacher to student ratio of no more than 1:8. Classroom instruction is enhanced by individualized computer learning in our monitored lab.
At AAD, we embed career exploration and job readiness into our core work. Students should be prepared to take advantage of these opportunities.
The GED is just a first step, thus we aid students in exploring post-secondary options and support students in the application process. AAD continues to assist students enrolled in a post-secondary program through tutoring, advising, and case management.
