GED & Life Skills / Job-Readiness Program Coordinator / Lead Instructor

The Durham Literacy Center has a vacancy for a full-time contract position (40 hours per week) for the Coordinator/Lead Instructor of the GED and Life Skills Program for Youth in the Durham County Detention Center. The right candidate must have bachelor’s degree; experience teaching in an alternative educational setting; organizational & communication skills; and computer skills, including MS Word and MS Excel. Experience working in a detention setting or with criminal justice systems is preferred.

This is a contract position from July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017, with a possibility for renewal.

This full-time (40 hours/week) contract position is responsible for implementing the Durham Literacy Center’s Life Skills, GED and Job Readiness Program in the Durham County Detention Center (DCDC).

The DCDC Program Coordinator is responsible for:

  • Approximately 20 hours of instruction in a classroom setting

  • 10 hours of lesson planning

  • 10 hours of coordination and management, including supervision of a part-time instructor and all aspects of record keeping, on-site coordination, and program communication with DLC staff. The Program Coordinator must ensure up to date records and reporting in accordance with the program requirements.

Functions

The Program Coordinator for the DCDC Life Skills, GED and Job Readiness for Youth conducts and facilitates:

  • Program implementation through DLC at the Durham County Detention Center

  • Enrollment, testing, and evaluation of students

  • GED and literacy instruction

  • Data management and reporting

  • Staff supervision

  • Coordination and communication between DLC and DCDC staff

  • Referrals to community partners in preparation for release (when possible)

Specific Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Implements the GED, Basic Literacy and Job Readiness program at the DCDC for youth, 16-24 years old

  • Establishes and maintains communication and working relationship between the DLC and DCDC staff

  • Provides reports and feedback on the implementation and/or progress of the program to the DLC and the Durham County Sheriff’s Department

  • Provides ongoing coordination and management of the program

  • Manages supplies and program materials

  • Provides referral information and support regarding GED or basic literacy programs that participants can enroll in upon release from the DCDC

  • Teaches several small group classes that focus on the academic content necessary for students to prepare for and pass the GED or High School equivalent tests

  • Supervises and guides staff and potential volunteers working in the DLC’s DCDC program

  • Administers pre and post tests (TABE or CASAS) to measure the achievement and progress of program participants

  • Ensures integrity of attendance and achievement data and report to the Adult Literacy Coordinator

  • Attends and participates in DLC meetings and meetings with the Sheriff and Jail staff, when required.

  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Adult Literacy Program Coordinator

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSITION

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in English, math, education administration or social work. An advanced degree in another field plus relevant experience is acceptable. Must have basic computer skills (MS Word & Excel), organizational, and writing skills.

EXPERIENCE AND/OR TRAINING

Two years of experience teaching in an alternative educational setting; plus one year management experience. Experience working in a detention setting or with criminal justice systems is preferred.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES

Duties may be complex due to the need for coordination, testing, counseling, supervising staff and managing program activities. Work will be performed at Durham County Detention Center. Position requires the ability to multi-task.
