"If there were a map of Durham and you had to mark where the Literacy Center is, you would use a heart, because that's what it's all about here . . . There's such love and such commitment to individuals that it's astounding to me."
Sara Bell, DLC Adult Literacy Tutor
We help adults meet their life goals by offering learner-centered educational opportunities.
A Letter from Our Director
Since 1985, the Durham Literacy Center has provided free instruction and tutoring
to over 17,000 adults and out-of-school youth. That’s worth a shout-out,
don’t you think?
In the midst of Durham’s exciting growth and change, the Center remains the
leading independent adult literacy provider in Durham County, the only
community-based organization focused entirely on adult literacy. You knew that,
but many don’t, and we ask your help in raising awareness about the DLC’s work.
There’s a lot to talk about.
The Durham Literacy Center …
Teaches adults to read and write
Provides English classes for immigrant adults
Prepares out-of-school youth and adult learners to pass high school equivalency tests, such as the GED
Teaches Durham residents basic computer skills
Provides GED and life skills classes for incarcerated youth at the Durham County Detention Center
In July 2018, the Durham Literacy Center merged with the Achievement Academy of Durham, bringing the strength and expertise of AA’s classroom approach to help students pass high school equivalency exams like the GED® and HiSET. As a newly merged organization, over 220 volunteers and 12 staff are helping their neighbors gain the reading, writing, math, computer skills, English language and educational credentials that are necessary to thrive in Durham's prosperous economy.
The DLC partners with many agencies, including Durham Technical Community College, the Durham County Library, Made In Durham, El Centro Hispano and the East Durham Children’s Initiative. We’re proud to have been recognized locally and statewide for our high quality programming, strict accountability and solid results.
To achieve our mission, the DLC trains and supports several hundred volunteers who serve more than 600 students each year.
The support of our volunteers, partners, donors and students is vital, and I thank you for being part of the DLC story.
