Nine Ways to Donate
1. Become a Member of the John Hope Franklin Literacy Society
The John Hope Franklin Literacy Society is the DLC's sustaining donor program. Members of this giving society enable the DLC to become more sustainable and allow our programs to thrive and grow. Please click here for more information.
2. Donate Online
3. Donate by Check
Checks are always welcome here at the DLC. Just make your check out to the Durham Literacy Center and send it to this address: Durham Literacy Center, PO Box 52209, Durham, NC 27717. In return, we will share the gift of literacy across Durham and send you a thank you letter, both to express our gratitude and for your tax deductions. One hundred percent of your donation supports our programs.
4. Year-end Tax Deductions, Retirement Accounts, Charitable IRA Rollover,
Gift Planning, and Stocks
Donations to the Durham Literacy Center are tax-deductible. We will mail you a Thank You letter documenting your donation and our non-profit status. To maximize your benefits, please consult your tax advisor or financial institution. Two thoughts to keep in mind:
If you have retirement accounts and are over the age of 59 1/2, you may be entitled to additional benefits (e.g., reduction in income or estate taxes) when taking a deduction for your gifts to the DLC.
Donors of any age can still make a deferred gift of an IRA or other retirement account by naming the Durham Literacy Center as a beneficiary of the account at their death.
The transfer of stock is an excellent way to support the Durham Literacy Center's mission and services, while also obtaining potential tax benefits. If you are interested in this option, please email our administrative/finance associate, Shondra Brewer, firstname.lastname@example.org or call 919-489-8383. It is very important that you notify us when you make a donation of stocks.
When you donate stocks, bonds, or mutual funds that you've held for more than one year, you can usually deduct their full fair market value. What's more, there's no capital gains tax! The deduction is limited to 30% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) instead of the usual 50% limit for donations of cash and short-term property made to public charities—though you can still carry forward unused deductions for five years. 5. Employer-Matched Contributions
Some employers will match employee donations to charitable organizations like the DLC. Others hold employee giving campaigns and donate the funds raised to a local nonprofit. Is your employer one of them? If so, let us know. We will provide you with information that you can share with your employer or the campaign leaders.
6. AmazonSmile & iGive Purchases
If you shop online, you probably have an Amazon account. Now you can sign up for a free AmazonSmile account to generate automatic donations to the Durham Literacy Center, all at no additional cost to you. Here are the details:
Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases to the charitable organization of your choice.
AmazonSmile is the same Amazon you know. Same products, same prices, same service.
Support your charitable organization by starting your shopping at smile.amazon.com.
Prefer to shop via other online shops? Sign up for a free iGive account, and you can generate donations at thousands of online shops at no additional cost to you.
