Dacia

At age 27, Dacia is the single mother of two girls, ages 6 and 8. Diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, Dacia became so frustrated by her struggle with reading that she left school in the tenth grade. Through 3 years of one-on-one tutoring at the Durham Literacy Center, Dacia achieved the following goals:

   >  Improved her reading skills 3 grade levels
   >  Passed two of five GED tests
(and prepared for a third test)

   >  Obtained a new job

   >  Completed a parenting class

   >  Advocated for daughters in school

   >  Volunteered at her daughters’ school

Dacia now reads to her kids regularly and helps them with their homework. She says, “First, my oldest daughter said she didn’t want to read. She’d throw the book down, but now she loves reading. She loves learning, period! That’s a big goal for me.” Dacia is helping to break the cycle of illiteracy and helping to create a brighter future for her family and for Durham.

“Improving my reading has really opened me up as a person. I have a lot more confidence. Nothing can hold me back. Because of the Durham Literacy Center, I’m going for my dreams. And my babies are right behind me!”  ~  Dacia

Update:  With her new literacy skills and self-confidence, Dacia was able to complete her GED studies at Durham Technical Community College. She earned her GED diploma on July 31, 2013! We are so proud of her!
