Volunteer Orientations, Adult Literacy Tutor Training, and ESOL Tutor Training will take place in August.
Volunteer Orientations
We highly recommend that prospective volunteers attend a Volunteer Orientation to learn about each of our programs, the various volunteer roles available during the coming semester, the expectations for each role, and any related training requirements.
Volunteer orientations for the Fall Semester will take place on:
Tuesday, August 9 (6-7pm)
Thursday, August 11 (6-7pm)
Monday, August 15 (6-7pm)
If you cannot attend an orientation or you already know which program is the best fit for you, please contact us at volunteer@durhamliteracy.org (or 919-489-8383, ext. 29). We will need to give you the material you will need to read prior to attending the required training. (If you are interested in volunteering with our ESOL or Adult Literacy programs, you must contact us to pre-register for the required tutor training described below.)
Tutor Training (Adult Literacy or ESOL)
Our Adult Literacy Tutor Training and ESOL Tutor Training are separate trainings that take place simultaneously. (You cannot attend both trainings for the same semester.)
Each training includes 12 hours of instruction and hand-on practice designed to provide our tutors with an in-depth understanding of our students, the research-based curricula we use, proven techniques for engaging students in active learning, and lesson planning.
You must register prior to the first night of training, and you must attend all three of the following sessions:
Monday, August 22 (6-9pm)
Wednesday, August 24 (6-9pm)
Saturday, August 27 (9am-3pm)
Please contact us at volunteer@durhamliteracy.org (or 919-489-8383, ext. 29) for more information about volunteer orientations, tutor training, and other volunteer opportunities that do not require the 12-hour tutor training.
