Happy Labor Day! Changes, Updates and Appreciation from the DLC Some big changes are happening

September 1, 2023

Some big changes are happening at the Durham Literacy Center!

Most notably, longtime Adult Literacy Program Coordinator, Gardy Perard, is leaving after almost two decades of dedicated service. Gardy started as an Adult Literacy Volunteer Tutor and found the work very rewarding. Over time, he transitioned from tutor to a trainer, eventually becoming the Adult Literacy Program Coordinator. Gardy leaves a tremendous legacy as he helped hundreds of adult learners improve their reading skills and supported them in meeting a myriad of other educational, professional and personal goals. An exceptional trainer, hundreds of volunteers were fortunate to learn how to teach using our phonics based methodology from Gardy. In addition to his skills as a practitioner, Gardy’s caring and thoughtful demeanor will be very missed at the DLC. His last day is September 5th.

Another longtime DLC staff member, Shondra Brewer, is also moving onto new opportunities! Shondra has worked behind the scenes as our Administrative and Finance Associate for over 16 years (leaving once and returning). Her steady attention to detail ensured that the DLC’s finances and personnel related procedures were in top form. In addition to managing our accounts, Shondra provided significant support to fundraising, facility maintenance and security, communications and countless other little details that make the DLC run. Her last day at the DLC is September 8th. We wish Gardy and Shondra the very best in their future endeavors and appreciate their steadfast commitment to improving literacy outcomes at the Durham Literacy Center. Thank you for your incredible service!
