DLC graduate opening doors to higher education


Meet Durham Literacy graduate Demetria Benjamin.

Demetria left school in the 10th grade due to problems at home. Without a diploma, she could not find jobs that paid a living wage. For 20 years, she worked multiple jobs to provide for her three children.

In 2010, Demetria’s nephew earned a GED diploma through the Durham Literacy Center. Impressed, 36-year-old Demetria enrolled in our program. She explains, “I wanted to further my education to provide a better life for my children. I wanted to show them that you can achieve your goals no matter how old you are.”
