After several difficult years, it’s time to celebrate our triumphs!
Earlier this month, the Durham Literacy Center honored thirteen young adult high school equivalency graduates (GED® and HiSET®) at an intimate graduation ceremony with family and friends. Our students’ confidence soared as they received the recognition they deserved after much perseverance and hard work.
"There a lot of stereotypes out there that people who get their GED are not enough or they don't have the equivalent education that any normal high schooler has, but at the end of the day, we are all normal, no matter what education you get or how we get it. I find myself just as equal."
Nalina, 2023 HSE Graduate
Success didn’t come easy as the pandemic disrupted these students’ lives. They struggled more than most with isolation and mental health challenges, learning loss, societal changes and more. Now, they are moving forward equipped with the credentials they need to move forward to college or vocational certifications.
More young people than ever are struggling to find their way back to school. According to the Associated Press, an estimated 12,000 North Carolina students never returned to school after the COVID-19 shutdown (March 2023).
The Durham Literacy Center’s Youth Achievement Program (YAP) offers a valuable alternative for 16-24 year olds who thrive in a small, supportive learning environment.
